Which serger stitch should I use?
Start with the job you want the stitch to do. A 4 thread overlock is a versatile choice for joining pieces with a finished edge, while a 3 thread overlock is often used to finish raw edges. For a delicate narrow finish, consider a rolled hem; for a flatter, decorative seam, explore flatlock. Differential feed can help control fabric movement and create gathers.
Whether you call it a serger or an overlocker, the stitches are the same — our serger stitch guide and overlocker stitch guide explain the basics, and serger troubleshooting can help when a stitch isn’t behaving. Always test a sample on your own machine.
