What is it?
A rolled hem rolls the fabric edge under as it is stitched, wrapping it tightly in thread for a narrow, delicate finish.
When should you use it?
- Scarves and shawls
- Ruffles and frills
- Napkins and table linen
- Hems on floaty dresses and blouses
What fabrics work well?
Lightweight wovens such as chiffon, voile, georgette and lawn. Heavier fabrics often resist rolling.
How many threads?
Usually three, sometimes two, depending on your machine. Many machines also need a lever change or a different stitch finger — check your manual.
What should the finished stitch look like?
A narrow, even roll with thread covering the edge smoothly and no fabric “whiskers” poking out.
Common problems
- Whiskers poking through — try a slightly shorter stitch or trim a little more fabric
- Edge not rolling — check the rolled hem setting is engaged
- Hem pulling away — some fabrics simply need testing on a scrap
